Caring For Your Elderly Pets

As your pet ages, changes in its behavior and physical condition will occur. Older pets need specific kinds of care to make their golden years healthy and happy. This is the time to start a senior health maintenance program to provide optimal care for your older dog. Our goal is to establish baseline values that will be useful comparisons as your dog ages. We can also detect abnormal values now that can be managed effectively with minor lifestyle changes.

If you are unsure whether your pet is considered a senior, please review the guidelines below.

  • 9 years for dogs weighing up to 40 pounds

  • 8 years for dogs weighing 40-60 pounds

  • 7+ years for dogs weighing over 60 pounds

  • 8 years for most breeds of cats
  • Common Health Problems for Senior Pets

We commonly see dental calculus and gingivitis, as well as obesity, heart, thyroid, adrenal and kidney problems in our older patients. Most of these problems can be mitigated if diagnosed early. The sooner we notice them, the sooner we can treat them, which is why senior wellness exams are very important at this stage of life.
