In Boulder, Even Dogs Go ‘Green’
BOULDER, Colorado, April 27, 2009—When it comes to the environment, Boulder is a progressive community, with green building codes and a carbon tax on electricity produced from fossil fuels. And now residents’ dogs can romp in an environmentally-conscious playground.
As part of a recent remodeling project, Broadway Animal Hospital installed artificial turf for its new exercise yard and dog agility training area. Veterinarian Lee Woods says the turf yard is healthier for dogs than lawn. "The material is safer for the dogs because there is little potential for bacterial contamination," Woods said. The turf has an under layer of drainage material made of ground rock with a sand base which is soft on dogs’ paws.
The artificial turf conserves water, reduces green waste from lawn clippings, and reduces pollution from lawn-care equipment. "We wanted to make the space healthier for the dogs in our doggie daycare and boarding services," Woods said. "We used environmentally friendly materials for the interior of our remodeled pet hospital, so we extended our commitment to the exterior, too" he said.
The new playground includes a dog agility course. Agility classes teach dogs to maneuver through hurdles, ramps, tunnels and poles, without the use of treats or leashes.
Broadway Animal Hospital will hold a free open house on Sunday, May 17th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 1405 S. Broadway, Boulder. Dog agility demonstrations, tours, and pet health information will be available. For more information call 303-499-5505 or visit http://www.broadwayanimal.com.
