Dog Agility
Fun for Pets, People
BOULDER, May 13, 2009 -- They race against the clock as they jump hurdles, burst through tunnels, and scale ramps. Their trainers urge them to go faster. When they reach the end, they get their reward: A dog biscuit and pat on the head.
Canine agility is a fun, fast-paced, competitive sport where owners guide their dogs off leash over an obstacle course. The sport tests the ability of dogs as they maneuver through courses consisting of jumps, ramps, and tunnels.
"Agility has become one of the most popular organized activities for people and their dogs," says Lee Woods, veterinarian and director of Broadway Animal Hospital in Boulder. In addition to the training for the dogs and bonding between human and canine, the sport provides an outlet for a dog's energy. Any healthy dog with good physical agility is a candidate for the sport.
Broadway Animal Hospital’s newly remodeled pet care center includes a dog agility course. The hospital will offer agility classes to the public beginning in June. Taught by a certified agility instructor, the classes will teach dogs to maneuver through hurdles, ramps, tunnels and poles, without the use of treats or leashes.
Broadway Animal Hospital will hold a free open house on Sunday, May 17th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 1405 S. Broadway in Boulder. Dog agility demonstrations, tours, and pet health information will be available.
