What's involved in a dental prophylaxis?

First, your dog will be examined by a doctor to determine if he/she is healthy enough for general anesthesia. During the exam the doctor may decide to perform pre-anesthetic blood work in order to determine if your pet's body systems are functioning properly and can process and eliminate the anesthesia.

During the procedure, the teeth are scaled and any rotten or infected teeth are removed. Next, we polish the teeth to remove any fine scratches that can encourage the growth of more calculus. Finally, your pet receives a fluoride treatment specially formulated for animals. This treatment has many benefits: it desensitizes exposed dentin, strengthens tooth enamel, decreases the rate of plaque reattachment, and stimulates remineralization of the tooth enamel. Each prophylaxis also includes a complimentary toenail trim!

We would be more than happy to put together an individualized estimate for your pet. Please do not hesitate to call us with any questions you may have.
